Trends regarding population growth and urbanisation rates of the Mediterranean region will be analysed. Coastalisation, the general urban development pattern of the region, will be discussed and described taking advantage from various data sources. A reflection was developed to demonstrate the connection between compact urbanisation, land-use and economic structure in three Mediterranean cities (Barcelona, Rome and Athens). Finally, an analysis on the observed consequences of urban sprawl will be presented.
